The Roman Forum — where the anteambulo walked ahead to clear the way

Anteambulo

In ancient Rome, the anteambulo was the person who walked in front of a patron through the streets of the city. Not a servant in the ordinary sense. A guide. Someone who moved ahead to clear the way, to announce the arrival, to make sure the path was open before the patron reached it. The word comes from the Latin ante — before — and ambulare — to walk. The one who walks before.

That is what this is. Before you visit anywhere — the airport, the stadium, the venue, the caffè, the pizzeria — this is where you come first. The hub. The guide that goes ahead of you. Every site in the network lives here. Every door is open from this one.
